Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Two cheers for 5/8/70!

5/8/70 - a dreadful-sounding aud tape that stands in the shadow of, well, just about every other May '70 show, but was clearly one of the best shows!

But anyway - back to 5/7 - I don't know if we'll see an upgrade on this. If you check out the original Weiner source, he notes that even the best available copies are patched together from different unknown-generation copies, on old & deteriorating reels that it was risky to even play.... After almost 40 years, it may be too much to hope that the original master might be uncovered.
He says, "The multiple tape sources, all with multiple gens, that represent this best possible version *could* someday be upgraded to the AUD master itself."

But as a 1970 AUD fan, it sounds fine to me, one of the best taping jobs of the year (not sound-wise, but when you take into account it was recorded in a gym and captured the entire show). It sounds even better when you compare it to the tapers' nightmare of 5/8/70....

Glad you referenced the GD Listening Guide. I think he has done a great job at reviewing shows and sharing his wealth of information.

The Mammoth Gardens show from 4/24/70 also falls into the same category as the 5/8/70 show... a monster show buried beneath a sonically challenging tape, but what a Dark Star!

I love the 5/7/70 show too. One of my favorite of the 1970 AUD tapes along with the 3/21/70 late show, 6/24/70 and 11/8/70 show. First Dead show I caught was in April '70 and they left a mark on me for sure. 1970 is probably my favorite year.

While we're on the subject - an old thread mentioning some of the lesser-known AUDs of 1970....
